Case 16 – The Green Dragon, Wymondham

History

The Green Dragon on Church Street, Wymondham, is one of the town's oldest and most historic buildings. Parts of the structure date from the 14th or 15th century, making it one of the oldest surviving pub buildings in Norfolk. Originally a medieval hall house, the building was later adapted for use as an inn and has served travellers, traders, and local residents for centuries. The pub is a Grade II* listed building, recognised for its exceptional historic and architectural importance.

Throughout its long history, The Green Dragon has been closely connected with Wymondham's development. The building is notable for surviving the Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615, which destroyed around 300 properties in the town. According to local tradition, scorch marks from the fire can still be seen on parts of the structure. Inside, the pub retains many historic features, including exposed timber beams, old fireplaces, and sections of its medieval layout, providing visitors with a rare glimpse into centuries of English pub history.

Historical records show that the Green Dragon was operating as a licensed inn by at least the 18th century, although it is likely to have served refreshments long before then. Over the years it passed through various owners and breweries while remaining a focal point of community life. Today, The Green Dragon continues this tradition, combining its rich heritage with modern hospitality. With more than 700 years of history linked to the site, it remains one of Wymondham's most distinctive landmarks and an important part of the town's historic character.
